The Victorians painted them black and white, but the
actual buildings date back to medieval times. The half-timbered villages
and cider orchards of Herefordshire make a wonderful cycling area. There
are plenty of village inns, teashops and historic houses to visit.
A very adaptable tour for groups of friends or families
- with something to please everyone. Your first night is spent in
Presteigne on the River Lugg. Your second night in Weobley, Dilwyn or Kingsland,
all classic Black and White villages. Remember to visit Jules restaurant
–voted as one of the best places to eat by our cyclists.
Easy to moderate cycling suitable for all ages and
abilities. Mainly flat with a few short steep bits. Total 44 miles/ 71km.
Opportunities for longer rides each day.
Day 1. Petchfield Farm to Presteigne. 15 miles/ 24km.
Cycle on idyllic country lanes and cross the River Lugg to cycle into
Wales. Presteigne is home to the unique Judges Lodging museum and many arts
events; ÒSheep MusicÓ a world music festival in July, and a classical
music festival in August.
Day 2. Presteigne to the Black & White villages.
12-21 miles (19-34km). Easy cycling in the water meadows & valleys of
the Lugg and Arrow. Unique half-timbered architecture in all the villages;
Weobley is a classic Black & White village, at Pembridge visit the
market hall, grand bell tower, Dunkerton's cider farm, and of course the
New Inn (only 600 years old) and visit the medieval dovecots at Eardisland
and Luntley.
Day 3. Black & White Villages to Petchfield Farm
8-17 miles (13-27km). On your last cycling day there are two grand
National Trust houses to visit; Croft Castle and Berrington Hall. Remember
to stop at Yarpole church for coffee, their bell tower is one of the oldest
timber structures in the UK.
Finishing any time in the afternoon, back at Petchfield
Farm.
