A two day walking holiday along the best parts of the Mortimer Trail. Follow the Trail through moorland to the National TrustÕs Croft Castle. Over Croft Ambrey - an Iron Age hill fort with magnificent views across 14 counties, and down to welcome sight of the riverside inn. Your last day takes you through the ancient stronghold of the Mortimer Family (Wigmore Castle), across Wigmore lake (a former glacial lake).

Walk Description. Easy walking with some steep sections. Total 16 miles/26km.

Arrive at your accommodation in the medieval town of Ludlow for your first nights stay. Plenty of time to explore the magnificent Norman castle. There are lots of very good inns and restaurants, including two Michelin starred chefs. Stay at the Feathers Hotel (Hotel/Inn option) or unique local guesthouse in the historic centre of Ludlow.

Day 1. Petchfield Farm to Aymestrey. 8 miles/13km. From Petchfield Farm your route takes you along the Mortimer Trail, past Croft Ambrey (an Iron age fort) and Croft Castle (managed by the National Trust), lunch at the Carpenter's teashop, and down to the village of Aymestrey. Overnight stop at a country inn or guest house (excellent reputation for food).

Day 2. Aymestrey to Petchfield Farm. 8 mile/13km. Continue along the Mortimer Trail, leading to the Wigmore Rolls and Wigmore Castle. Cross a glaciated lake - no water since the Ice Age! to the pretty village of Burrington. Finishing any time in the afternoon, back at Petchfield Farm.
