Follow the River Teme upstream for 14 miles/ 22km. This
country house is situated just on the border of Shropshire & Wales.
Once the home of Sir Wilfred Thesiger the explorer (Emperor Haile Selassie
also stayed here). Now a family run hotel with an informal atmosphere, but
with high standards of comfort & excellent food (AA rosette award for
its restaurant). There is a croquet lawn with herbaceous & wildlife
garden leading down to the River Teme.
Easy cycling along the River Teme. Total 31 miles/ 50km
plus a choice of day rides. Opportunities for longer rides each day.
Day 1. Petchfield Farm to Milebrook. 14 miles/ 22km.
Cycle to Milebrook following the River Teme on an idyllic lane. Visit a
roman village for lunch; stop for tea, books, and to admire the grand yew
hedges of Brampton Bryan or just picnic by the river & we guarantee you
will see kingfishers.
Day 2. Explore the River Teme and the Welsh borders.
Choice of routes 12-34 miles (19-55km). As you cycle upstream, the idyllic
lanes lead you past ruined castles, ancient churches, OffaÕs Dyke and
remote inns. The routes take you to unspoilt border towns like Clun,
Knighton or Llangunllo. The market town of Knighton has an excellent
ÒOffaÕs Dyke Visitor CentreÓ and you can even follow the picturesque Heart
of Wales railway into the heart of the welsh hills. Or head for one of the
great inns in the valley for a leisurely lunch.
Day 3. Milebrook to Petchfield Farm. 12-17 miles
(19-27km). A gentle ride down the River Teme to Hopton Castle (short
detour for a 1930Õs traditional tearoom), then stop at the unique Sun Inn
parlour pub. Finishing any time in the afternoon, back at Petchfield Farm.
