Day 1. Petchfield Farm to Hay on Wye

Cycle along the border with England and Wales, crossing the dramatic Offa’s Dyke at Hergest Ridge. Then down to cross the toll bridge to Hay on Wye, a lovely town, famed for its bookshops, castle and great places to eat. Total 38 miles (63 km)

 

Day 2. Hay on Wye to Brecon

Cycle around the base of the Black Mountains to the mystical Llangorse Lake (with its ancient Crannog), and on into the Cathedral town of Brecon. Brecon is a lively town, with a canal & waterside theatre, & local museums celebrating Brecons military links. Total 20 miles (32 km).

 

Day 3. Brecon to Crickhowell

Plenty of time to explore Brecon, then take a leisurely cycle ride along the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal - one of the most beautiful sections of canal in the country. Detour to explore the Talybont Reservoir (extra 14 miles). The ride ends at Crickhowell's superb bridge (Wales’ longest bridge). Crickhowell is a grand Georgian coaching town with a reputation for good eating places.  Total  16 - 30  miles (26 - 48 km)

 

Day 4. Crickhowell to Hay on Wye

A challenging day. Cycle up the Vale of Ewyas to the picturesque ruins of Llanthony Abbey (the Abbey Hotel is a great place for lunch). Then continue over Gospel Pass for fantastic views from Hay Bluff and a great downhill ride into Hay on Wye. Hay is internationally known as a book town with 30 book shops selling over a million books.  Total 29 miles (47 km)

 

Day 5. Hay on Wye to Petchfield Farm

Plenty of time to explore Hay and all those bookshops before you start the easy ride through the Black and White villages of North Herefordshire. Unique half-timbered architecture in all the villages – including medieval dovecots at Eardisland and Luntley. Finishing any time in the afternoon, back at Petchfield Farm.  Total 34 miles (53 km)

The Swan at Hay. Hay’s principal coaching inn - dating from 1821. Full of character, from the original Georgian windows overlooking the garden to the cobbled stable block, with the original horses' name places still intact. Lovely garden.

 

The Firs Guesthouse, modern house with beautiful garden and outstanding welcome in a quiet area of Hay on Wye. Great breakfasts in the conservatory.

 

The Bridge Café. A relaxed base for people coming to enjoy the outdoors, with a comfortable lounge in the old café. Free fast WIFI access

 

Ty Helyg Guesthouse,  is a Georgian townhouse built in the 1780’s. Ty Helyg has been brought up to date with light airy rooms, excellent bathrooms and wifi. Downstairs there is a guest lounge with wood burner and licensed “honesty bar”

 

The Bear. This former coaching inn,has been welcoming guests for 500 years. You can eat and drink in the historic bar with its oak beams, wooden floors and open fires. There is also a restaurant and a garden for summer meals and evening drinks.
