Day 1. Petchfield Farm to Leintwardine

Cycle to Leintwardine, following the River Teme on an idyllic lane.  Add an extra loop to cycle to Hopton Castle for afternoon tea.   Total 5 - 17 miles (8 - 27km) 

 

Day 2. Leintwardine to Hay on Wye

Cycle out of the Teme Valley to cross the River Lugg at Presteigne which marks the border with Wales. Presteigne is home to the unique Judges Lodging museum. Head back into England to explore the picturesque half-timbered villages of North Herefordshire; visit a cider farm, the New Inn (only 600 years old) and local gardens. Finish the day, by crossing the toll bridge to Hay on Wye. Dominated by its castle – Hay is internationally known as a book town with 20 book shops selling over a million books. Total 37 miles (59 km). 

 

Day 3. Circular tour from Hay to Llangorse Lake

Lots to do at Hay, Cycle to Llangorse Lake, go canoeing down the Wye or take the time to explore Hay and all those bookshops. Total 28 miles (45 km)

 

Day 4. Hay on Wye  to Rhayader

Following the spectacular River Wye upstream, on an old railway line. Lunch at the spa town of Builth Wells (Home to the Royal Welsh Show every July). Then keep the River Wye as your guide, through meadows and moorland A short off road section and crossing a tiny suspension bridge over the River Elan, makes this section an adventure. Total 38 miles (61 km)

 

Day 5. Rhayader & the Elan Valley Lakes

Your rest day! Rhayader is home to the Elan Valley dams and lakes. Cycle to the lakes on the fantastic new cycle path and sculpture trail for a picnic with great views. Visit the Red Kite feeding station at Gigrin Farm to watch these spectacular birds. Total 10 to 26 miles (16 -41 km)

 

Day 6. Rhayader to the Teme Valley

A challenging day with two hills. The ride today takes you through the magical valley of Abbeycwmhir – with its ruined Cistercian abbey. Over the Black Hill & Offa’s Dyke on old sheep drovers routes, to look back and (down) on your cycle ride. Finish the day with a 15 mile downhill ride past the border town of Knighton. Staying overnight in  Leintwardine or Bucknell. Total 42 miles (68 km)

 

Day 7. Leintwardine to Petchfield Farm

A gentle ride down the River Teme.  Finishing any time in the afternoon, back at Petchfield Farm.  Total 5 miles (8  km)

The Lion Hotel. A lovely Victorian fishing hotel on the banks of the River Teme. Excellent restaurant, local produce, local beer and cider. Riverside garden

 

The Swan at Hay.  Hay’s principal coaching inn - dating from 1821.  Full of character, from the original Georgian windows overlooking the garden to the cobbled stable block, with the original horses' name places still intact. Lovely garden.

 

The Firs Guesthouse, modern house with beautiful garden and outstanding welcome in a quiet area of Hay on Wye.  Great breakfasts in the conservatory.

 

Penralley House.  Beautiful Georgian town house built about 1774.  Penralley House has a striking façade of local granite, and a lovely garden with views to the Elan Valley and surrounding countryside.  Excellent rooms and warm welcome.
